1991–1993
University math courses.
1992–1993
Some lovely concepts in discrete signal processing only became clear after plugging away in matlab...
1994–1998
Used occasionally in graduate school.
1995–2001
First used in Matrix Algebra class as part of undergraduate electrical engineering degree.

2000–2004
2002–2008
I taught it for 6 years. Not bad for what it is used.
2003–2007
Mostly for school-related stuff. Matlab is like crack for academics. I use Numpy/Scipy when I can.
2004–2006
Was penalized for handing in assignments that had Matlab and this funny lang called "Python". The instructions clearly said "matlab".
2005–2008
Most sientific projects rely on matlab, and I also used it in my graduation project.

2005–2007
2006–2008
Numerical analysis and finite elements...
2006–2009
Used this before Python for my script-level research code and some computer vision courses.
2006–
2007
Used it at University. Doesn't seem useful to computer programmers, more like an engineer's modelling tool.
2007–
for dissertation project
2008
Demon hellspawn language. Might have something to do with not being a math person or not being given matrix problems to code using it.
2008–
I first took this one in signal analysis class. Good for its intended use as a mathematical programming language. When working with tons of numbers it's hard to debug though... I once helped a friend with a MATLAB code that ran a big motherfucking multi-million iterations loop, andthe only way to debug was to observe your code. My real MATLAB trial was in data transmission class though... I did in that class a simulation of a BPSK-QAM transmitter that sends a file through a headphone cable, it was pretty ballin'. I left that class a genius at MATLAB and it looks like I'm set for even more years of MATLAB...
2008–2009
I only touched the very basics of it during some university lessons. They say it is a very powerful scientific tool.

Briefly used in University, hmm a language for engineers not programmers.
