1992–1993
My introduction to programming, in first grade.
1995–2000
I taught myself to program using code examples from the Visual Basic Programmer's Journal. Culminated in the creation of Cowtris. Then I discovered the brave new world of open source languages and didn't look back.
1999–
Implemented a fricking cross-browser compatible drag-and-drop layout system in the days before Javascript debuggers.
1999–2007
My entry to web programming. Worked during college on a PHP-based CMS. Was great in terms of being easy to get started with, but I don't miss it.
2001–2005
Learned it in one evening spent with the Camel book trying to build a Pig Latin web filter. Still holds a soft spot in my heart.
2003–
About all it's got going for it is that it's right there in my shell.
2007–
Learned it by osmosis from Plone and Zope work on the job. Now my default language. Pros: readability, maintainability, the community, Guido's time machine. Cons: the GIL.
2007
Spent a summer building a Rails app. It was all right; certainly nicer to work with than PHP; but I like Python better.
Hacked on a MUD, but never did anything serious with it.
